Asbury Cemetery

From what I've heard, there was once a town called Asbury where now only a church and this cemetery stand at the corner of Winchester Pike and Noe-Bixby Road. My mom tells me stories of hearing about it, and friends of my parents have also told me about it, although I have yet to find anything that verifies it. It's entirely believable, however, when you consider that the tiny town of Brice is just a few minutes away, and Franklin County used to be full of little towns. I was on my way home from getting tires for my car when I made a stop at Asbury Cemetery with my mom on June 11, 2004. The oldest stone we found was extremely hard to read and read 1814. After that, there were none again until 1832, and then quite frequent years between then and now. I'm pretty sure that the date of 1814 makes this one of the oldest if not the oldest cemeteries in Franklin County. Personally, I didn't believe that it was 1814 until we did a comparison and realized it was that date. The picture of the stone is below, and is almost impossible to read. We had to utilize touch and prodding technology to figure it out :-). This is a very nifty little cemetery, and includes the first VietNam veterans plaque that I have found in all of my adventures. Please, if you have any history about this still-functioning little cemetery or the town it used to serve, email me: Tonee_1986@yahoo.com.
