Crawfis Cemetery - Lancaster/Sugar Grove, Ohio

On November 25, 2004 the Grave Hoppers spent a chilly Thanksgiving day exploring cemeteries all around Lancaster, in Fairfield County. One of the more known cemeteries, just outside of Lancaster on the corner of Sugar Grove Road and Crawfis Road is the Crawfis Cemetery. This one is quite interesting to me because it is on the side of a hill. A rather steep hill, actually. Leo and I hiked to the top of the hill to see the older stones up there and were greeted by a beautiful view. I would love to see the tree when it is covered in leaves. Anyhow, this one is fairly old, dating from 1816, and the best part is that it's still in use. Shumaker, Pearce, Crook, and Shellanbarger are the most common names in this one. There are less than half a dozen infants and children in this entire cemetery; I can only distinctly remember 3. The Crook family has a very large Bronze monument at the base of the hill.
