Green Lawn Cemetery - Columbus, Ohio

On June 8, 2004 the Grave Hoppers went on a whirlwind exploration of several Franklin County cemeteries, including the monster of them all, Green Lawn. Below are all of our pictures from the expedition. Located at 1000 Green Lawn Avenue, simply take I-71 to Green Lawn Avenue, and head west. The road dead ends at the gate to the Cemetery.
Green Lawn Cemetery is 360 acres of burial space and aboretum just west of Downtown Columbus. Viewable from most satellite photos of the city, it is by far the largest cemetery in central Ohio (the 2nd largest being St. Joseph) and is also the 2nd largest cemetery in the state. This grandaddy of Ohio cemeteries was one of the last to be created within city limits, as just after the Civil War cemeteries within city limits were outlawed.

On August 2, 1848, Green Lawn cemetery as we know it was dedicated, however there are stones in it with much older dates, such as one in section O with a date of 1823. The reason is that several smaller cemeteries from around Franklin County were moved into Green Lawn when it was opened. Green Lawn is the home to many Columbus notables, such as James Thurber, Dr. Goodale, the Neil family, and Samuel Bush, the great-grandfather of President George W. Also interred here are several former Ohio Governors, including James Rhodes who rests in the Chapel Mausoleum next to his wife.
Green Lawn also serves as an arboretum, being the home to seven state champion trees. There are several art tours that go through Green Lawn, and the cemetery itself offers several art and history tours throughout the year.
The last 9 rows or so are pictures taken last Fall that I completely forgot I had. I found them hidden in a completely different directory, so I added them! There are over 40 of them; the 3 rows above those are the ones taken on 11-12-05.
Since Green Lawn is so massive, I make very frequent trips there, and I always manage to find something I hadn't seen before. Because of my frequent trips, this page will be updated fairly regularly.

On my most recent trip I met a young lady named Nina who was with her dad and working on a school project. I'd like to wish her luck with that, and hopefully they enjoy their visits to Green Lawn in the future (and possibly this site).

The most recent pictures are at the bottom of the page.
