RiverView Cemetery - Parkersburg, WV
RiverView cemetery was a real treat for me. The same day I explored Holliday Cemetery in Parkersburg, I got to explore this amazing chunk of West Virginia history. Bob, from Holliday, gave us remarkable directions from Holliday, but I don't think I could find this one again without starting at Holliday first :-). Either way, there was a groundskeeper here, too, who asked to remain anonymous but who shared some great history of the cemetery with us. There are several men important to West Virginia's history here, including the representative who voted that WV stay in the Union during the Civil War, several governors, and a few members of the Kennedy family, which JFK came to visit during his presidency. There is a great mixture of old and new stones, historical figures and average joes. There is also a stone, pictured below, of a ship captain. This stone has a special story, as two days before Leo and I visited it fell and nearly crushed a schoolboy who was making fun of the cemetery and complaining about how stupid history is. The little boy was safe, so I find this story highly amusing. I recommend this one to anyone who goes to visit Parkersburg. I'm hoping to go back when I visit Holliday again soon.
