Stukey Cemetery - Sugar Grove, Ohio
I've driven past this one many times, and decided on November 11, 2005 that I would stop and use up what little battery power I had left to explore it.
Stukey Cemetery appears to be a fully modern cemetery when you're just driving by, but closer inspection reveals a section in the back corner of very old, very worn stones. When I was there, a man was mixing concrete for what I think is going to be a headstone placement. The hole I found was awfully small to be a burial, even for the burial of an infant. He was a little too busy to talk to me, so I guess I'll just have to go back in a while and see what he did for myself.
This one is named for the Stukey family, which is a majority of the burials here. The first Stukey I found was buried here in 1818; a Revolutionary War veteran. There may have been older Stukey burials, but many of the old stones are in bad shape and are illegible. This one is exceptionally special to me, however. Not only did I find a stone from 1801, but I found one that is labeled 1768. Yes, you read that correctly. 1768. I'm looking into this one; I'm currently awaiting someone to contact me from the Fairfield County Historical Society. Hopefully I can update soon with some background on this one.
Stukey Cemetery is on Old Logan Road, just outside of Sugar Grove, Ohio. To get there from Columbus, take US 33 south through Lancaster. If you take the bypass, exit on Tarkiln Road, and cross it going straight onto Old Logan Road. If you go through Lancaster on the US 33 Business route, make a right at the Tarkiln Road light, and then make a left onto Old Logan Road. It's the first one on the left when you go under the bypass, so it's tough to miss. Follow Old Logan Road maybe a mile, and you'll see Stukey Cemetery on the right-hand side. If you go past the plant, you've gone a little too far.
